The Houston Elementary Media center is a library as well as a functional computer classroom. In addition to the usual function of providing books for reading, students also receive weekly or bi-weekly instruction in technology and literacy skills. Each teacher has an assigned class time for Media but have the option of scheduling additional sessions for research to support our hands-on Project Based Learning program of study.
Technology classes focus mainly on using the Online Catalog, and gaining proficiency with programs such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. In addition, we work with our district-issued iPads and with sites such as Edmodo, which is a Facebook-like site designed for students and for school use. The Media Center is open from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm daily.
In addition, we use Common Sense Media and their provided lessons to help our students become good digital citizens in the age of Social Media. I would highly recommend using Common Sense Media for your own personal use as well. Their website is linked below.
Books are checked out to students for two weeks and may be renewed once for an additional checkout.
