Visual Arts

The Art program at Houston Elementary follows the SC Standards for Visual Art. In Art, we learn about different media, techniques, and processes. We study the Elements and Principles of Design. We choose and learn about a wide range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas.
We learn about Art History and cultures that create art. We reflect upon our work and the work of others. We make connections between the Visual Arts and other disciplines such as Math, Science, and English Language Arts.
Houston students’ artworks are proudly displayed throughout the year in different exhibits and competitions. We participate in the Columbia State Fair Art Exhibition, the Piedmont Interstate Fair Art Exhibition, as well as Youth Art Month which is in March at the Chapman Cultural Center.
Recently, we dedicated our new art gallery in memory of one of our finest and most beloved teachers, Marianne Burfete. Students now have a chance to honor her memory with their beautiful works of art!
