Principal's Message

{title}
Hello and welcome to Houston Elementary School, home of the Huskies!
My name is Mark Hendry and I’m excited and honored to serve as your new principal.
The 2014-2015 school year will be my twenty-third in education and ninth year as an elementary school principal.
Originally from Florida, my family and I moved to South Carolina back in 1999. My wife, Kendra, is a high school English teacher and we are the proud parents of two children. Hayden, my son, recently graduated from the Citadel and our daughter, Haley, will be a sophomore at Clemson University this year. Our family is thrilled to be joining the Houston family!

Vision, Values, and Viking Pride

Vision, Values, and Viking Pride
Donning a pair of blue and gold sunglasses, District Seven Superintendent, Dr. Russell Booker told a packed auditorium at the Chapman Cultural Center on April 17th that “the future for the district is so bright, we need to wear shades.”
During his 4th annual State of the District address to the community, Booker provided a summary of Spartanburg Seven’s progress of the past five years and pointed to new opportunities on the horizon. Citing the district’s rating of “Excellent” on the 2014 SC Report Card, the tremendous success of 7Ignites and being one of only a few districts in the state to be fully digital, Booker applauded D7’s entrepreneurial and innovative spirit and challenged the community to continue to embrace programs and initiatives worthy of a 21st century education.

Congratulations, Isaac Bobo, Terrific Kid of the Year!

Congratulations, Isaac Bobo, Terrific Kid of the Year!
The Kiwanis Club of Spartanburg sponsors the Terrific Kids program. “Terrific” is an acronym for Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive and Capable. Each month a student from each class who exemplifies these characteristics is selected as the Terrific Kid of the Month. Then, one student from each school is selected as the Terrific Kid of the Year. We are proud to announce that 5th grader Isaac Bobo has been selected as the Houston Elementary Terrific Kid of the Year. This is what Isaac’s classroom teacher had to say about him: “Isaac is a very sweet and kind individual. He will do anything for his teachers and friends. Isaac is respectful and courteous. He follows the classroom rules and completes all of his schoolwork and homework on time. He works very hard and is very dependable. Isaac enjoys volunteering to help others and is a joy to have in the classroom.”
